Mission and history
Slovenia has had a long tradition of tourism research, but their implementation became organized and structured only with the establishment of International Tourism Institute. After the country gained its independence, it started searching for its own tourist identity and model of competitive economy, which would take into account the principles of sustainable development. That even increased the need for specialized research, development and consulting. The history of the institute is relatively short, but highly successful. We gained recognition in Slovenia and abroad as a professional, reliable and powerful research and consultancy centre with a realistic view of the current state and a keen sense for identifying future trends in tourism.
Our results and references testify to our strong position, both at home and abroad. ITI carries out some essential projects, such as the development of Tourism Satellite Accounts and various development and marketing strategies for tourist destinations and companies. We have been involved in several innovative and sustainable projects, partly financed by the EU. We disseminate our knowledge successfully abroad, especially to the emerging markets of South-eastern Europe, where we, among other things, worked as a team leader in a project „Support to implementation of the National Strategy for Tourism“ in Serbia.
ITI's experienced experts offer promising young researchers mentorship so they can progress and make themselves more valuable. On the other hand, this gives us a good basis for future development. Institute has a wide network of associates in Slovenia and cooperates with more than 50 foreign organizations from about 20 countries. Over the years, we have continuously built a strong international partnership network. In Slovenia, we strengthen our network with numerous tourist companies and institutions, which actively participate in joint projects, provide results, communicate their ideas, problems, needs and propose solutions to the institute.
Our knowledge, experience, contacts and information confirm ITI’s position as a central and leading position research and consultancy institution in Slovenia and abroad.
